Something in the Areia.. is the signature analogue photo collection of Atelier Areia, and holds deep, personal significance as it is the foundation and inspiration behind the webshop itself. This carefully curated series of photographs, all captured in Portugal, embodies the essence of the atelier's vision: a celebration of the natural beauty, textures, and timeless moments found in simple, organic landscapes.
Where the Inspiration Began
Armed with my trusty analogue camera, I set off to explore the landscapes of Cascais and Sintra, unsure of what I would find but eager to capture the essence of Portugal. The beauty of these regions unfolded slowly, in quiet moments: the sound of waves crashing against the cliffs, the warm golden light at sunset, and the fresh scent of pine carried on the Atlantic breeze.
Cascais, with its rugged coastal charm, offered endless inspiration. I spent hours wandering the beaches, watching the tides shift and the sand reshape itself with every wave. Guincho Beach, with its windswept dunes and powerful surf, became a favorite spot. There’s something magical about the way the elements shape this landscape, constantly changing, yet timeless.
Then there was Sintra, a place where the landscape felt almost enchanted. The lush, green hills rise steeply, blanketed by dense forests that seem to hold centuries of secrets. In the early mornings, mist lingers over the land, softening the contours of the ancient castles that emerge mysteriously through the trees. The rolling hills are dotted with palaces and manor houses, each surrounded by towering pines and vibrant ferns. Walking through this region, with its winding paths and hidden gardens, feels like stepping into a forgotten world, where nature and history coexist in perfect harmony.
Why Analogue?
The use of an analogue camera is an intentional decision. For me, shooting on film allows a deeper connection to the moment. Every shot is deliberate, every frame considered. The process of waiting for the film to develop mirrors the patience and stillness I felt in these landscapes. In a world where everything moves so quickly, analogue photography slows things down, reminding us to be present.
The textures and tones that analogue film creates were also vital in capturing the natural beauty of Cascais and Sintra. The grain of the film adds a warmth and depth that digital photography just can’t replicate, bringing the timeless quality of these landscapes to life.

Even though the Something in the Areia.. collection has been completed, my connection to Cascais and Sintra remains strong. These landscapes continue to inspire me, not just as a photographer but as an artist. They remind me to slow down, to appreciate the beauty in small, fleeting moments, and to let nature guide my creative process.
